![]() ![]() ‘In the Midst of So Noble an Amphitheatre’ The book under review goes a long way towards redressing my grievances in this regard. Unfortunately, since those studies involved texts written by partisan Marxist scholars who present everything in a manner that suits their dialectics only, my thirst for the “story” of Bengal Renaissance couldn’t be quenched. Later, ironically as part of my preparation for the Civil Services Exams, more in-depth studies took place. Later, as students in the Secondary level, we got to know about the events a little more, albeit in a drier & more Indo-centric manner. Like most Bengalis of our generation, my fascination with Nineteenth Century Bengal, especially the intellectual upheavals & tumults that took place in & around Calcutta during those days, began with surreptitious (since I was underage then, while the novel was decidedly adult) reading of সেই সময় (THOSE DAYS) by Sunil Gangopadhyay, which was getting serialized in “Desh” in early 1980-s. ![]()
